Unending Galaxy [Beta 4] Released !

title08Unending Galaxy [Beta 4] is now available for download !

At last, the beta 4 is available. As usual, I won’t list everything new, fixed or changed, because there’s way too many things to list and it would make the devlogs fairly useless, but here are the main points:

  • New combat AI with better flying patterns and turret tracking
  • Trading and production system overhaul
  • Improved user interface and gameplay
  • Automated ships can be tweaked
  • Many bug and stability issues fixed

I hope you will enjoy this release. The changelog may not be as big as usual, but between the improved combat mechanisms, the trading overhaul and the more complete and consistent UI, there’s already plenty to do.

Devlog: Trading System (mostly)

title07My apologies for the delayed devlog, it has been a busy month for me, but don’t worry the development is still going as it’s used to. Beta 4 is even going to be released later this week barring any last minute major problem.

Back on topic, the last two weeks were spent putting the finishing touches on the general user interface, fixing a bazillion small issues, improving things left and right, and more importantly finalizing the trading system.

Let’s get to it 🙂

Fighter Wing

Snap1474First of all, a big thank you to the fine folks at the Bay12 (Dwarf Fortress) forums ! Your help has been invaluable. If you want a pick at the Unending Galaxy’s topic it’s here.

Anyway, as we are slowly but surely closing in on the final release, I have been reviewing each feature one by one in order to make it whole. There’s still a lot of ground to cover but we’re getting there. I also improved how ships act in battle in quite a major way. Next beta should be available in roughly 2 weeks, barring any IRL issues.

Let’s get down to it, shall we ?

Unending Galaxy [Beta 3] Released !

title06Unending Galaxy [Beta 3] is now available for download !

As usual, I won’t list everything new, fixed or changed, because there’s way too many things to list and it would make the devlogs fairly useless, but here are the main points:

  • Ownership of a locations depends on who has the most stations there
  • New semi-random events happening at irregular intervals
  • Free Trader AI for player ships, a fire and forget trade command
  • The Swarm lifeforms are able to take over sector and infest mining stations
  • Massive performance and stability boost
  • Many little changes to the economic system
  • Animated stations, constellations, and many other graphical improvements

I hope you will enjoy this release. As usual, feel free to comment here or on the forums, any input is welcome. That said, there’s still a few other things to cover and explain, this is what I am going to do in this article.

Devlog: Free Traders, code optimization and stuff

Snap1427Hi guys !

My apologies for the delayed update, life got in the way and it’s likely that next week will be problematic as well. When I have to make a choice between coding and writing here, I favor the former. So don’t get alarmed by the erratic schedule, development goes on as usual.

Anyway, I made a fair bit of progress toward the release of the Beta 3 with a massive performance and stability boost, the new “free trading” AI module for your ships and multiple smaller other changes i made to the game.

Let’s get to it, shall we.

Deluxe Edition and Game Modding Tools

Snap1451This article will explain what the deluxe edition of Unending Galaxy is including. You can acquire it through a paypal donation or by buying the game at the itch.io store. As explained before, the free version is in no way, shape or form a demo. It’s not time limited, all gameplay features are included, and it will always be that way. Buying the game ensure that I will continue working on it. Also, by buying the game at any point, you’ll get access to all future versions as they become available.

That clarified, let’s get to what the deluxe version currently includes:

First and foremost, the game modding tools which allow you to basically change anything in the game. Secondly, the Imperium map, an extremely large hand-crafted galaxy designed to increase replay value and to show everything the game has to offer. And finally, 5 additional starting scenarios with the added bonus of giving access to techs otherwise unavailable.

Devlog: Territorial expansion

Snap1418Hey there,

Sorry for the delay. As this week has been mostly about testing and balancing, it’s going to be a fairly unusual devlog format (I also apologize in advance for the mostly unrelated screenshots alongside the article). The seemingly small change of assigning sector ownership to whoever hold the most factories in the area, or to the first one to drop a military base, had extremely large repercussions in many, many parts of the game. As there’s really no accurate way to “speed up” the game to test said feature, I basically had to let the game run itself days and nights while occasionally monitoring and tuning the effects. Let’s see what happened.
